Mentoring

Executive Director Larry Sears offers personal mentoring to men who are dealing with short term crises.   There is no fee for this service and Larry typically meets with each man about every two weeks to help the individual process the issue through the Lord.

In addition to his master’s degree in counseling, Larry has 16 hours of additional coursework in counseling and is trained as a Stephen Minister.

The mentoring will continue for a period of usually three to 24 months depending on needs of the care receiver.   Among issues that Larry has confronted with the care receivers are divorce, marital troubles, post-jail and prison problems, terminal illness, job loss, children’s troubles, workplace problems, poor health and mid-life crises.    Men going through divorce must attend our divorce seminar while participating in the mentoring program.

Larry does not mentor men with substance abuse or violence issues.

The ministry’s services are better defined as Christian mentoring and do not fall into the professional therapy range.   Larry is not a licensed therapist and does not practice professional therapy.   Where appropriate, Larry refers his care receivers to professional counselors.

Larry’s role is to be a good listener, help care receivers find their trust in the Lord, pray with them, and assist them in finding resources or options for resolving their issues.

Due to the demand, Christian Initiatives is developing other mentors to participate in this program.
